What is an example of program management?
Imagine a global company is rolling out a new IT system across 5 continents in over 100 countries. The work could be planned as a program consisting of multiple projects. In addition, let's say that the early roll-outs in a single country will be used to trial the new system. Lessons learned from the initial roll-out will be applied on later roll-outs.
Each of these projects requires a project manager to manage its planning and implementation. However, since all these projects are related in some way, it would be best if they were coordinated. By coordinating all of these related projects, a more efficient use and sharing of resources can take place. It also means that lessons from one project can be applied to other projects, which can make later projects run more smoothly.
This planning, coordination, and sharing of resources is the role of program management.
