Is a program manager a project manager?

No, a program manager is not the same as a project manager. Program managers are responsible for leading and coordinating large-scale programmes of change which consist of multiple projects. Project managers are responsible for overseeing the successful execution of individual projects.

Both roles require strong project management , organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Planning and attention to detail are required for both roles, but program managers also need to be able to see the bigger picture of how each project fits into the overall programme which in turn help to meet wider strategic goals.

Program managers typically also have a broader understanding of the project development process and are responsible for defining the program strategy and roadmap.
