Sunderland Empire Theatre first opened its doors in 1907 on High Street West in the city centre. It is the largest theatre between Edinburgh and London, and it had a full restoration in 2004. The Empire, run by the international entertainment group Live Nation, is the only theatre between Glasgow and Leeds with enough capacity to accommodate large West End productions. It is best known for hosting the final performance of British comic actor Sid James, who died of a heart attack on stage in 1976.
The amateur Royalty Theatre Group performs a variety of low-budget performances at the Royalty Theatre on Chester Road throughout the year. Before becoming a worldwide celebrity, film producer David Parfitt worked for this company and is now a theatre patron.
