Coventry is close to the M1, M6, M40, M45, and M69 highways. The M45, located a few miles south of the city, opened in 1959 as a branch to the original stretch of the M1 motorway, which connected London with the Midlands. Because the portion of the M6 north of the city did not open until 1971, and the M69 between Coventry and Leicester did not open until five years later, this was effectively the first motorway to serve Coventry. The M40, which is linked to the city through the A46, is located 12 miles (19 kilometres) south of the city centre, south of Warwick, and provides people with an alternate dual road and motorway route to London.
The West Coast Main Line serves Coventry train station, with services operated by Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, and West Midlands Trains. Intercity rail routes from London, Birmingham, and Wolverhampton terminate here. It is also serviced by railway lines that go from Bedworth to Nuneaton.
There is a train line that connects it to Leamington Spa and then to the south coast. Coventry’s suburban railway stations are located at Coventry Arena, Canley, and Tile Hill. Coventry Arena, on the Coventry to Nuneaton Line, opened in January 2016 largely for the Ricoh Arena, where football, rugby, and concerts are generally held.
