The Kemptown area has its own small annual street festival, the Kemptown Carnival, as does the Hanover area.
Brighton has a large expanse of shingle beach within the city limits. East of the Palace Pier, a flat sandy foreshore is exposed at low tide. The Palace Pier section of Brighton beach has been awarded blue flag status. Part of the beach to the east of the city centre has been redeveloped into a sports complex.
The city council owns all the beaches, which are divided into named sections: Boundary, Norfolk, Bedford, Metropole, Grand, Centre, King’s, Old Ship, Volk’s, Albion, Palace Pier, Aquarium, Athina, Paston, Banjo, Duke’s, Cliff, Crescent and Black Rock. All are connected by the Undercliff Walk.
The seafront is also home to many restaurants, sports facilities, amusement arcades, nightclubs and bars.
